A.LINKED MIRROR

Now, we are all aware of the importance of “plastic recycling” in addressing environmental pollution issues but often people are used to pointing to large social enterprises or governments as the main actors in this effort. However, society ultimately consists of individuals. Small changes in behavior and awareness, moving away from the belief that individual efforts won’t make a difference, can eventually lead to significant movements toward the sustainability we desire.

A mirror changes its shape depending on what it reflects. Similarly, plastic can either become waste or be given new life, depending on how we use it. This project is designed to provide an intuitive connection between oneself and plastic, emphasizing the awareness that we have a close relationship with it. Linked Mirror aims to connect recycled plastic and the self to emphasize that we are the agents of action.

Five mirrors made from a 1m x 1m recycled plastic board are placed sequentially, allowing us to face the social phenomenon from the perspective of both the individual to society. When you look into the smallest mirror, you only see yourself, but as you move to larger mirrors, you start to see the people around you and the surrounding background. By creating all the mirrors from one 1m x 1m recycled plastic board, from the smallest mirror (the individual) to the largest mirror (society), we aim to express that all entities are connected.

Furthermore, when looking into the mirror, you overlay the recycled plastic with your own reflection, encouraging a sense of agency in plastic recycling and fostering a positive awareness that small individual actions can make a difference.

오늘날 우리는 환경 오염 문제를 해결하는 데 있어 ‘플라스틱 재활용’의 중요성을 잘 알고 있습니다. 하지만 여전히 많은 사람들이 이 노력을 대규모 사회적 기업이나 정부 같은 주요 주체들에게만 맡기려는 경향이 있습니다. 그러나 사회는 결국 개인들로 이루어져 있습니다. ‘개인의 노력은 별 차이가 없을 것이다’라는 생각에서 벗어나 행동과 인식의 작은 변화를 만들어간다면, 궁극적으로 우리가 바라는 지속 가능성을 향한 거대한 움직임으로 이어질 수 있습니다.

거울은 무엇을 비추느냐에 따라 그 모양이 바뀝니다. 이와 마찬가지로, 플라스틱은 우리가 어떻게 사용하느냐에 따라 폐기물이 될 수도, 새로운 생명을 얻을 수도 있습니다. ‘Linked Mirror’ 프로젝트는 플라스틱과 나 자신을 직관적으로 연결하여, 우리가 플라스틱과 밀접한 관계를 맺고 있음을 인식하게 하기 위해 설계되었습니다. 이 프로젝트는 재활용 플라스틱과 개인을 연결하며, 우리가 행동의 주체임을 강조하는 데 목적이 있습니다.

1m x 1m 크기의 재활용 플라스틱 보드에서 만들어진 5개의 거울은 순서대로 배치되어, 개인에서 사회로 이어지는 시각적 흐름을 경험하게 합니다. 가장 작은 거울을 보면 오직 나 자신만 보이지만, 점점 큰 거울로 이동할수록 주변 사람들과 배경까지 비추게 됩니다. 개인(가장 작은 거울)에서 사회(가장 큰 거울)로 이어지는 모든 거울을 하나의 재활용 플라스틱 보드로 제작함으로써, 모든 존재가 서로 연결되어 있다는 메시지를 담고자 했습니다.

또한, 거울을 통해 자신을 바라보는 순간, 재활용 플라스틱과 자신의 모습이 겹쳐지면서 플라스틱 재활용의 주체가 바로 나 자신임을 깨닫게 하고, 개인의 작은 행동이 변화를 이끌어낼 수 있다는 긍정적인 인식을 심어줍니다.
